Turon
Turon is a popular Filipino snack made of ripe bananas—typically saba—wrapped in a thin spring roll wrapper, often with slices of jackfruit for added sweetness and aroma. The wrapped rolls are coated in brown sugar and deep-fried until golden and crispy, creating a perfect contrast between the crunchy exterior and the soft, caramelized filling inside. Known for its rich flavor and satisfying texture, turon is commonly enjoyed as a street food or merienda (afternoon snack) across the Philippines.
The Preparation
Prepare the bananas
Peel the bananas and cut them in half lengthwise.
Coat with sugar
Roll each banana slice in brown sugar until well coated.
Add filling (optional)
Place a few slices of jackfruit on top of the sugared banana.
Wrap the turon
Lay a spring roll wrapper flat, place the banana near one edge, fold the sides inward, and roll tightly. Seal the edge with a little water.
Heat the oil
Pour enough oil into a pan and heat over medium heat.
Fry the turon
Place the wrapped turon in the hot oil. Fry until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally.
Caramelize the sugar
Sprinkle extra brown sugar into the pan while frying to create a caramel glaze on the wrapper.
Drain excess oil
Remove the turon and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
Serve and enjoy
Let it cool slightly, then serve warm and crispy.
